Though the "inspirational teacher" theme may feel done to death, Freedom Writers succeeds because it emphasizes the students as much as the teacher. Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby, Boys Dont Cry) comes to a southern California high school bubbling over with naive optimism, but quickly discovers that her unruly classroom isnt easily won over by her good intentions. After a few floundering attempts to connect with her students, Gruwell gives them the assignment of keeping journals about their own lives--an assignment that the class bites into with relish, which eventually bonds them together and pushes racial rivalries aside. This plotline has been made before, sometimes well, sometimes poorly Freedom Writers, by drawing heavily from the published journals of the students--and thanks to a (mostly) unheroic script, direction that emphasizes individual characters over stereotypes, and rigorous performances from the whole cast--makes the story seem fresh and genuine. Swank does solid work, but the standouts are April L. Hernandez as a girl whose gang wants her to lie and send an innocent boy to jail and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) as a teacher who resents Gruwells offbeat success. Also featuring Patrick Dempsey (Greys Anatomy), Scott Glenn (The Right Stuff), and a plethora of strong young actors. --Bret Fetzer

Freedom Writers ought to be watched by ALL administrators, parents, teachers and students!
My eldest son had the worst time in school and so by eighth grade (1986), he was placed in an alternative education school in Queens, New York. He was only one of a short handful of students who was white. Often times he was terribly misunderstood or simply not listened to because of his race, until Martin Luther Kings day was celebrated. My son wrote a beautiful essay about the profound affects MLK left upon his grandparents and me, that which we passed on to him. At first the students and the teacher took offence which caused my son to respond in a negative fashion and I, of course was called. I spoke firmly with my son and then asked to speak with his teacher Ron. My message to Ron was he had the perfect opportunity to get his students to write down why they felt offended and then read and discuss what came from that. Ron, an African American agreed to try my idea. The results were wonderful in many ways. My son still enjoys writing his ideas and thoughts down, his self confidence took a major leap and may of the students from his class are still in touch and still giving encouragement to each other and to many others whom followed.
Freedom Writers was nothing less than inspiration, and a wonderful reminder of my sons experience! Communication is our best tool in overcoming all odds, and, learning about ourselves and one another.
A story told over and over again

Even though this story has been covered many times in different ways, this was a very good movie and the acting was outstanding. It also reaffirms that there are good people around us.
